In recent years ATF oil were increasingly used in manual transmissions (e.g. Castrol TQ-D). There's also an MTF (Manual transmission fluid) from Castrol, SAE 75W90 SMX or so, which I use in my 5-speed gearbox of my E21. Otherwise the local BMW-dealer has the recommended fuels, try them, if you don't want to use these 0,5 l bottels, you'll always have some resiudual.
